The Travelling Birthing Comb

Like the "Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants," there is a small, wooden tool in my doula bag that carries a heavy history of courage. It’s a simple birthing comb, but it has become a sacred heirloom of the pregnancy spectrum.

This journey began with me. I first held this comb during the birth of my own child, my fingers wrapped tightly around its teeth as I found my own rhythm. Since then, it has traveled from palm to palm, joining the stories of other women in our community, each one leaving behind a trace of their own resilience.
What is a Birthing Comb?
If you haven't seen one used in labor, it might seem like a simple accessory, but it is actually a powerful tool for pain management rooted in the Gate Control Theory. By gripping a wooden comb so the teeth press into the acupressure points of your palm (specifically the Lao Gong point), you create a new sensation for your brain to focus on.
Essentially, the "pinch" of the comb travels to the brain faster than the duller ache of a contraction, effectively "closing the gate" on pain signals. It’s a grounding, physical distraction that helps you stay present when the waves feel high.
A Tool Passed Between Hands
I offer this comb to the families I support not just as a physical tool, but as a symbol of continuity. When you hold it, you aren't just holding a piece of wood; you are gripping the same wood that several other women in Minto and beyond have squeezed during their most transformative moments.
There is a unique kind of power in knowing that you aren't alone. You are holding a tool of strength, knowing that a "sisterhood" of women have used it before you, found their breath with it, and emerged on the other side stronger.
Whether your story is one of joy, transition, or deep challenge, this comb is a reminder: you are part of a long lineage of strength, and you have everything you need to see this through.
